A computer network is a system of computers that are linked to each other so that staff of an organisation can have access to common information, transfer files to each other and communicate via e-mail. Computer Network Engineers or network technicians are responsible for installing and maintaining networks. They may also train staff in the use of the network.

The Network technicians role may involve identifying the requirements of an organisation prior to installing a new PC-based computer network. They will be expected to establish and design the appropriate system, install (or oversee the installation of) the physical elements - cables, PC's, servers etc. and format the managing software to control access. They will also manage the setting-up of peripheral devices and configure communications systems for Local Area Networks, Wide Area Networks and Internet connections. A network Engineer will be able to resolve software problems on the systems and generally administer the operation of the network. With experience an engineer can go on to become a Systems Analyst.
